How Long Does a Fluoride Treatment Last?
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that is proven to strengthen and protect teeth from decay. Most toothpastes and mouthwashes contain fluoride, and most municipalities add fluoride to their water supply to prevent tooth decay in the population. Dentists offer treatments of concentrated fluoride in the form of a gel, varnish, rinse, or foam.
The application of a professional fluoride treatment takes anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour, depending on the form of treatment. You should not eat anything for at least 30 minutes following the fluoride treatment to allow the fluoride to absorb, and you should not brush your teeth for at least four to six hours after. The fluoride will soak into the enamel for the rest of the day until you brush your teeth, and then it is washed away.
A fluoride treatment will continue to protect your teeth for a few months; most people should have a fluoride treatment every three to six months. Ask your dentist how frequently you need fluoride treatment.
Benefits of Fluoride
Fluoride works by rebuilding minerals in tooth enamel that has been eroded due to decay. It also prevents the growth of harmful bacteria on teeth, strengthens tooth enamel, and prevents cavities from forming. It does not remove decay, but it can prevent present decay from further penetrating into a tooth.
Both adults and children can benefit from fluoride. Children are less likely to develop cavities the earlier they are exposed to fluoride. You can brush your child’s teeth with a very small amount of fluoride toothpaste as soon as they have their first tooth. Children who are learning to brush their own teeth should use a rice grain-sized amount of fluoride and should always be supervised by an adult when brushing.
