X-rays

X-rays Dental

X-rays are an important part of dental care. Thanks to this technology, dentists can diagnose conditions in the mouth, teeth, gums, and jaw that cannot be seen with the naked eye. With safe levels of radiation, they capture images of the inside of your mouth. X-rays are just one of the many services we offer at Hale Family Dental.

What are X-rays?

An X-ray is a wave of energy that is absorbed when it passes through something. The denser the material, the lighter it appears on X-ray film. In dental X-rays, this means that your teeth and jawbone will appear light, and your gums and cheeks will be dark. They can help your dentist identify problems, such as:

  • Tooth decay

  • Infection

  • Bone loss

  • Positioning of teeth to help prepare for dental procedures

  • Abscesses

  • Cysts

  • Tumors

What is the procedure?

Your dentist will likely take your X-rays at the beginning of your dental appointment. While you are sitting in the examination chair, your dentist or dental hygienist will place a large, lead bib over your torso area to protect your vital organs. You will be given a bite wing to bite down on; your dentist will position the machine around your head and capture images of the inside of your mouth.

Are X-rays safe?

It is true that X-rays use radiation, however the amount of radiation your body is exposed to is minimal. Dental X- rays are proven to be safe for children and adults. Some X-rays are done digitally, which is even safer. In addition, patients wear a lead bib while being X-rayed as a precautionary measure. You can also ask your dentist for a thyroid collar to protect your thyroid. The only patients who should avoid X-rays are those who are pregnant. Let your dentist know if you are or could possibly be pregnant. Feel free to ask us more about X-rays at your next visit to Hale Family Dental!
