Sealants

Sealants

There’s no replacement for regular tooth-brushing and flossing, but what if there was another defense against cavities? Dental sealants are the newest method to stop cavities from forming.

What are sealants?

Sealants are a thin, protective coating made of plastic or other dental materials that is applied to the chewing surface of the back molars. Your teeth, especially the back molars, have miniscule nooks and crannies which can be hard to clean, making them the perfect place for cavities to form. A sealant works by covering the tiny spaces in your molars, so they are protected from bacteria.

What is the application process?

The process for applying sealant only takes a few minutes and is totally painless:

  1. First, your dentist will thoroughly clean the teeth that are going to be sealed.

  2. The teeth are dried, and a cotton ball is placed around the tooth to keep it dry.

  3. An acidic gel is applied to each tooth to help the sealant bond.

  4. Your dentist will remove the gel and dry the tooth again.

  5. Finally, your dentist will paint on the sealant and use a special blue light to cure the sealant.

Who can get sealants?

People of any age can benefit from sealants, but it is best to get them at an early age. The best time to have sealants applied is as soon your molars erupt, which is around age 6 for the first molars and age 12 for the second molars.

How long are sealants effective?

Sealants will work for 2-4 years before they need to be reapplied. Your dentist will assess their condition at each regular visit and can reapply them whenever necessary. Remember, sealants are meant to be additional protection against cavities; regular brushing and flossing are still crucial to a healthy mouth.
