How Long Do Dental Sealants Last?
Dental sealants are a thin layer of composite resin that is brushed onto the chewing surfaces of the back molars. They are used to prevent cavities by acting as a barrier to stop cavity-causing bacteria from coming in contact with the tooth surface.
Lifespan of Dental Sealants
Dental sealants can last a long time if they are properly cared for. Generally, sealants prevent 80% of cavities for the first two years they are on, and 50% of cavities in years three and four. Then they will decrease in effectiveness every year after that. They can safely stay on the teeth for up to nine years unless the sealant becomes compromised from damage.
If a sealant cracks or breaks, then it is no longer sealing the tooth, and harmful bacteria can potentially become trapped under the sealant and eventually form a cavity. Your dentist will check the condition of your child’s sealants at each appointment to see if they need replacing. Most dentists recommend sealants be replaced every two to four years, or as soon as a sealant becomes damaged.
How to Extend the Life of Dental Sealants
Sealants can become damaged over time due to normal chewing, but there are some habits that should be avoided to ensure their effectiveness:
Chewing ice
Chewing hard candies
Biting your nails
Opening packaging using your teeth
While sealants are effective at preventing cavities, they are no substitute for daily brushing and flossing. Make sure your child continues their daily oral hygiene routine.
