When Should I Start Taking My Kids to the Dentist?

Raising a child is no small task, and babies do not come with an instruction manual. There are so many questions to ask, including when to start dental care for your child, and the answer may be earlier than you think. Introducing your son or daughter to dental care at an early age will help ensure good dental health for life.

 Your Child’s First Dentist Visit

You should plan your son or daughter’s first dentist appointment when his or her first tooth erupts, or before they turn one year old. Either way, their first visit should be between 6 and 12 months old.

The best way to introduce a child to dental care is to start young. If your child’s first dentist visit is between 6 and 12 months old, they are likely too young to be nervous about a dentist appointment. But if you wait until they are older for their first dentist visit, they may develop some anxiety towards it.

What to Expect During the First Visit

The first visit mostly consists of introducing your child to the basics – the dentist, the examination chair, and the tools used. The dentist may do a quick examination of their teeth, but only if the child is comfortable. Your dentist will ask you about your child’s oral hygiene and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

After their first visit, your child should have dentist appointments every six months. During the second visit, the dentist will examine their teeth and do a gentle cleaning.
