What is the Purpose of an Oral Exam?

Having an oral examination by your dentist is one important thing you can do to benefit your oral health. An oral exam is used to prevent and diagnose conditions, and for your dentist to learn and record your health and history. A new dentist will usually conduct an oral exam at your first appointment, so they can provide you with the best care.

Prevent and Diagnose

Dentists perform oral exams to prevent and diagnose conditions like:

  • Cavities

  • Gingivitis and gum disease

  • Oral cancer

  • A damaged, infected, or decaying tooth

Your History

Oral exams are also an opportunity for your dentist to gather information about your oral and overall health history. They will ask you questions about:

  • Any medical conditions you previously or currently have

  • Your personal dental hygiene routines

  • If you smoke

  • If you have had braces

  • When your last X-rays were

  • Update your medical history

  • Assess your lymph nodes and neck for abnormalities
