What is a complete oral examination?
When was the last time you got a complete oral examination? Every 3-5 years, your dentist may suggest a complete oral examination. So what is the difference between these exams and a regular check-up?
Complete oral examinations are a form of preventative dentistry that goes more in-depth than regular checkups. Dentists address all areas of oral health including oral cancer and other complicated diseases during these appointments. Comprehensive dental exams happen less often than regular cleanings, and they can benefit both children and adults. These exams last a little longer, typically taking around 45-60 minutes.
What do complete oral exams entail?
Oral History Discussion. A complete dental exam begins with assessing your oral history in detail.
X-rays. Complete oral examinations typically include taking X-rays to check the health of your mouth, gums, and teeth.
Teeth Cleaning. A dental hygienist will clean each of your teeth individually with special tools, floss, and fluoride.
Dentist’s Examination. The dentist will check for signs of decay and cavities, as well as look at your bite. They will also check for signs of periodontal disease by examining the state of your gums.
Screenings. Most dental offices offer oral cancer screenings at these appointments. A dentist will also check your face, lips, and neck for any abnormalities or other issues.
Advice. The dentist will then offer advice on personal oral hygiene habits or tips on how to keep cavities and gum disease at bay.
Complete oral exams are a powerful tool in preventative dentistry. By identifying potential problems early—like gum disease, cavities, or even oral cancer—you can take action before these issues become serious.
