What Should I Know Before Getting My Wisdom Teeth Out?

If your dentist has informed you that you should have a wisdom tooth extraction, you probably have a lot of questions. A wisdom tooth extraction is an incredibly common procedure. For many people, however, it is their first experience with surgery, so it’s best to prepare as much as possible to prevent post-surgery complications.

Here are a few things you should know before surgery:

1.   You will need to eat only soft foods after surgery.

Your mouth will be sore and swollen for a couple days, so stick to soft foods only: broths, puddings, purees, soups, and smoothies. Take a trip to the grocery store the day before surgery to pick up some of these foods so they are already on hand when you get hungry after surgery.

2.   You will need to rest after the procedure.

Plan to take at least two full days off from work, school, and exercising after surgery, but preferably longer. You will likely experience pain and swelling for a few days; the best way to keep this pain and swelling at a minimum is by keeping your head elevated and letting your body rest.

3.   You will need someone to take care of you.

Find a friend or family member who can drive you home after surgery, as it’s not safe to drive a car or operate heavy machinery after being under anesthesia. It’s also a good idea to have this person close by for a couple days afterward so they can bring you food and medications and help you stay comfortable.

4.   You won’t be able to smoke or vape after surgery.

Smoking or vaping will delay your healing process because smoke and nicotine vapor will irritate your surgical sites and creating suction in the mouth can cause dry sockets.

5.   You won’t be able to brush your teeth for 24 hours after surgery.

Brushing, rinsing, or spitting can disturb your surgical sites and impede the healing process so it’s best to leave your mouth alone as much as possible, especially for the first 24 hours after surgery.
