How to quickly recover from root canal treatment.
Root canals are a routine procedure. With proper aftercare practices, many patients feel back to normal within a few days.
Follow These Tips
For the best chance at an efficient healing journey:
Stay on top of pain relief. Take over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen, as directed by your dentist to help manage inflammation and discomfort. If you were prescribed medication, take it as instructed.
Eat soft foods for the first 48 hours. Foods like smoothies, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and soup are gentler on the treated tooth while it heals.
Chew on the opposite side. Avoid chewing on the side of the treated tooth, especially if you have a temporary filling or crown.
Use ice packs if needed. Applying an ice pack to the outside of the cheek in short intervals may help reduce swelling.
Rinse with warm salt water. A gentle warm salt water rinse can help keep the mouth clean and soothe irritated tissues. Avoid vigorous swishing.
Avoid strenuous exercise for a few days. This will help to prevent possible bleeding, swelling, and pain.
Get adequate rest. Sleep can help you return to your normal routine sooner.
Stay away from irritants. Smoking, alcohol, and hot or cold beverages can harm the healing process.
When to Contact the Dentist
Mild discomfort is normal, but you should contact the dentist if you experience:
Persistent or severe pain or pressure.
Increased swelling.
A bite that feels uneven or painful.
Signs of an allergic reaction, such as a rash.
Your temporary filling or crown comes loose or falls out.
