How Often Should I Get X-rays?
Your dentist gets a good look at your teeth, but there are some things they can’t see with the naked eye. Dentists use X-rays to get a closer look at your teeth to spot cavities, bone loss, gum disease, and other oral conditions.
Most people require X-rays once a year. However, some people may need it more frequently or less frequently. Factors that will impact how often you should have dental X-rays include:
Your oral health
Your risk for disease
Your age
Signs and symptoms of oral disease
If you are at a higher risk of developing disease or cavities or if you smoke cigarettes, your dentist may recommend more frequent X-rays. You may also need more frequent X-rays if you’ve been diagnosed with cancer or have recently experienced a dental injury. Patients who have excellent dental health and are not at risk of developing cavities may only need to have dental X-rays every two to three years. If you are visiting a new dentist, they will take X-rays at your first appointment to establish a base line for your oral health.
Safety and Risks
X-rays use radiation which can be harmful when exposed to large amounts, however, the amount of radiation used in an X-ray is a very small amount. So small, in fact, that you are exposed to more radiation in a day of using your smart phone or being a passenger on an airplane. Your dentist will also cover your torso with a lead apron to protect your vital organs. X-rays are not recommended if you are pregnant unless absolutely necessary; your dentist will suggest that you wait until after the baby is born to have dental X-rays.
