Can You Still Get Cavities if You Have Veneers?

After investing the time and money to get dental veneers, you will probably want to take care of them the best you can so they can last as long as possible. This includes brushing and flossing daily to prevent cavities.

Veneers cannot develop cavities because they are made of porcelain or composite resin. The teeth underneath the veneers, however, can still form cavities. Teeth with veneers are especially vulnerable to decay if the veneers have been placed improperly, creating uneven edges where food particles can collect and grow bacteria.

Decay forming underneath veneers is much less likely to happen if you’ve chosen an experienced cosmetic dentist to place your veneers. An experienced cosmetic dentist will be skilled at placing veneers evenly, so the veneer is flush with the tooth and there are no uneven edges.

How to Prevent Decay from Forming Underneath Your Veneers

There are many things you can do on your own to prevent cavities from forming underneath your veneers, including:

  • Avoid using abrasive toothpastes that can damage your veneers

  • Drink less alcohol, as it can damage the bonding agent used to adhere the veneers to your teeth

  • Wear a mouth guard while you sleep if you grind your teeth at night, or while playing contact sports

  • Avoid knocking your teeth on hard objects or biting down on hard foods or objects

  • Brush twice a day and floss at least once a day, making sure to get the edges of your veneers

  • Visit your dentist at least twice a year for a thorough examination and teeth cleaning
