All About Dental X-rays
Dental X-rays are a very important part of maintaining good oral health. X-rays are captured images of your teeth and mouth that help your dentist evaluate your oral health and determine the dental care you need. They are used to identify problems, like cavities, gum disease, and impacted teeth.
X-Rays Can Detect Dental Conditions
Regular X-rays can help dentists detect:
Decay that can’t be seen with a visual examination
Decay underneath a filling
Gum disease
Infection
Impacted teeth
How Often Do I Need Dental X-rays?
It is recommended to have dental X-rays done at least once a year, or more often in some cases, if your dentist is monitoring the progress of a condition or treatment.
Children sometimes need more frequent X-rays so their dentist can see how their adult teeth will grow in and predict future alignment problems.
If you’re visiting a new dentist for the first time, they will probably conduct X-rays for you so they can get an accurate idea of your current dental health.
Dental X-rays Are Safe
X-rays do involve a miniscule amount of radiation exposure—so small they’re considered safe for children and adults. Digital X-rays have even lower radiation levels than developing them on film.
For even more protection, your dentist will place a lead apron on your torso, making sure to cover all the vital organs. Thyroid collars are also available to protect the thyroid.
The one demographic who should avoid all X-rays are those who are pregnant or may possible be pregnant. Radiation is dangerous for developing fetuses, so inform your dentist if there’s any chance you could be pregnant.
