5 Useful Tips for Keeping Your Dentures Clean
Dentures are a significant investment, and your smile is one of the first things people notice about you—two good reasons to keep your dentures clean and cared for. Here are five simple tips to help you out!
1. Brush your dentures at least once a day
This may sound obvious, but it’s one of the most important things you can do to keep dentures clean since it effectively removes food, plaque, and other bacteria. Be sure to use a non-abrasive denture cleanser and a soft-bristled brush. If you use a denture adhesive, carefully clean in the grooves that fit against your gums.
2. Rinse regularly
A quick rinse goes a long way. After eating, always run water over your dentures to get rid of any food particles. Soak dentures overnight (in water or a soaking solution) if your dentist has instructed you to do so. Most dentures need moisture to maintain their shape. Contact your dentist if you have questions about caring for your dentures.
3. Keep your mouth clean
It’s no use taking great care of your dentures if you don’t keep their environment clean as well! Bacteria in your mouth will be transferred to your dentures (and vice versa), so it’s important to maintain a good oral care routine. Brush and floss daily if possible. In addition to your teeth, brush your tongue, cheeks, and the roof of your mouth.
4. Visit the dentist
Regular office visits give your dentist the opportunity to catch any potential problems with you or your dentures early on. Make an office visit at least twice a year!
5. Don’t be harsh
Avoid abrasive cleaning materials and ingredients that could damage your dentures, including whitening toothpastes, bleach, and stiff-bristled brushes. Don’t subject your dentures to hot water, since this could warp their shape.
