When do dental crowns need to be replaced?
Many people will have dental crowns placed on one or more teeth in their lifetime. Crowns can last up to fifteen years with proper care, but the lifespan of a crown depends on many different factors. Oral hygiene, what the crown is made of, and where the crown is located in the mouth are all factors in how long a crown will last. Replacing crowns periodically is important to maintaining good oral health. Here are some signs that indicate a crown may need to be replaced:
Age
The average lifespan of a crown is anywhere from five to fifteen years, but can also be shorter than that. If you’ve had your crown for several years, ask your dentist if it needs to be replaced.
Pain or swelling
If you experience swelling, pain, or tenderness in a tooth with a crown on it, make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible to have it examined. The tooth beneath the crown may be damaged or otherwise need attention. Your dentist may be able to simply repair your crown instead of replacing it entirely.
Damage
The wear and tear on teeth from normal activities like chewing can damage crowns. Teeth grinding will also wear down crowns faster than usual. If your crown appears damaged in any way, it should be replaced.
Receding Gums
Bacteria is more likely to congregate around a crown than a natural tooth, often causing the gums to recede near the edge of the crown. If you experience receding gums, have your crown examined to ensure it is properly placed.
